Scenario 5: Bridgehead

For this scenario I have returned to the duel between the armies of General Wise (USA) and General Gilder (CSA) as they fight their way over Featherstone County...

The objective of the scenario is to complete the game with none of the enemy's forces within one grid area to the North of the bridge, thus establishing a bridgehead.

The CSA start with a unit North of the bridge
It is quickly engaged by Union Cavalry

Confederate Artillery arrives

Fierce hand to hand fighting

At Turn 12 the CSA is at Exhaustion Point but keep firing hopefully

but fail to dislodge the Union force who prevent the Bridgehead building

The inevitable log-jam ensued at the bridge; one day I'll try this game on a bigger battlefield!

  1. Looks great, nice and clean. I like the old Airfix ACW we used to use them with General er Terry Wise'rules.

    1. Cheers Paul. Terry Wise's Introduction to Battle Gaming (along with Featherstone's Battles with Model Soldiers) was such a huge influence and showed what could be done with the (then) relatively cheap boxes of Airfix figures.

  2. Why suh, a struggle of clearly epic proportions.
Good to see the ACW stuff on the table with a choice scenario and some drama.
Love those old Airfix figs - which I still had more than the 3 I can lay claim to.

    1. Cheers Duc. Hopefully lots more with these in the near future!

  3. The battle result does not look close. The attacking Federals secured a victory almost without breaking a sweat, it seems. I like the old Airfix figures too!

    1. Indeed Jonathan, the Feds took the Rebs apart in this game - unusually good dice rolls.

  4. Great stuff! Of course the Airfix figures are very nostalgic - I like your idea of keeping them in small units, so a unit can be all the same pose.

    1. Thanks David. I'm currently upgrading the 4 figure to 6 figure bases for regular infantry. I've been trying to keep the same poses (the Old School in me) though it's not going to be possible throughout the two armies - 2nd hand figures are just stupidly expensive and I was fortunate to have been donated some which has allowed me to expand.

  5. Great looking game, Airfix, simple scenery, great commander and county names! Well done.

    1. Forgot to ask what size are the bases and the squares?

    2. Thanks Tradgardmastare! I've tried to keep the names topical - the Capital of Featherstone County is Scrubyville. The two Generals are not terribly successful I'm afraid - in real time General Gilder has been marching towards Washington for longer than the ACW actually lasted.

    3. 2 inch square bases on a 3 inch grid

  6. I always look forward to your battle reports; these reports using One Hour War-games scenarios are specially useful, as I have been using them more often to get games in. This scenario always just becomes a slugging match. Perhaps using only 4 unit or three unit armies would change the results; although I doubt it.

    1. Thanks John - I guess it's about getting enough bases across the bridge before they get bogged down. It's a great little scenario.

  7. Hi Maudlin- Great to see the old Union and Confederate AIRFIX...the Airfix Union HP/OO was my first ever box of soldiers back in the early 1960s. Cheers. KEV.

    1. Cheers Kev - The Waggon Train was my first box from Airfix. I think it was 1967 or 68!!

  8. Doesn't matter how big the table is, ts a bridgehead, its ALWAYS crowded!

I think the Yanks are mounted on Italeri ACW horses.

    1. Thanks Ross. You're right of course, I just wondered if my scaling down of the battlefield to an 8x8 grid hasn't favoured the defending side somewhat?
