Despite the Red General's orders to hold the bridge, his main objective is keeping hold of the hill. Blue's objective is the hill alone and he knows about the ford that is, unfortunately, overlooked by Red due to poor reconnaissance.
Blue sends half of his force to attack the town; the rest will tackle the hill
Red concentrates on what he believes to be the only crossing point
Once aware of the threat, Red rushes troops to counter it
Fierce fighting breaks out in the town
Red has lost control of the bridge but is holding the hill
Blue's attack on the hill stalls
The Blue General sensing defeat leads a mad charge through the town
The hill attack has been slowly reducing the defenders
and on Turn 11 Red's CO is killed and Exhaustion Point reached, though they still hold the hill
Blue is heartened by the enemy's loss and presses on
Blue takes full control of the hill
Turn 15, the battle ends. Decisive Blue victory.
A very nice scenario with both fighting in a built up area and an assault on a hill. Definitely one to play again.
Maudlin Jack Tar,
ReplyDeleteYet another brilliant battle report! I only wish that I was feeling better and could emulate your efforts. That said, reading your blog has raised my spirits a lot.
All the best,
Bob
Glad I can help Bob! Hope you're better soon and getting back to the Eastern Front Campaign.
DeleteOn Turn 8, was Blue attacking madly because he sensed red was teetering on defeat or that his own Blue forces needed to redouble their efforts? How long does a 15 turn game take to play White uniformed Egyptians with red fez are always a pleasing sight?
ReplyDeleteI didn't explain that too well Jonathan! The middle section of the game saw little happening and of course Blue had to take the hill to win - the stall led the Blue General to commit his reserve but he had left it too late to cross via the ford and had to risk going through the town under fire. In the end his force attacking the hill were successful anyway!
Delete15 Turns generally take about 40 minutes playing solo, including messing about taking photos, so with the set up a game, is about an hour. It usually takes longer to write the report! This length of time is perfect for me as I'm generally busy.
Great game Maudlin Jack, your soldiers look great too. What make are they?.
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Paul.
Thanks Paul. This game was mainly using Irregular Miniatures for Army Red, though the cavalry are Empress Miniatures. Army Blue is a mix of Irregular and Redoubt Miniatures. The Redoubt chaps are slightly larger but I don't worry about that!
DeleteAn enjoyable battle review, I too like the fez clad fellows.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Photos of Joseph Morschauser's colonial games are a major influence. I would have liked to do this in 40mm or 54mm even! The Redoubt Egyptian Infantry are a nice compromise!
DeleteAlways a tricky one The Waterloo 1815 1/72 Egyptians are also very appealing but a bit late now!
ReplyDeleteThat is a nice set of figures - I wonder how many General Gordons there are in people's "Bits Boxes" around the world?
DeleteGreat battle sir. The blue general is a man after my own heart, a mad charge through a town is about the extent of my tactics.
ReplyDeleteCheers mate! Top Brass (your humble author) suddenly woke up to the fact that the game was half over and the battle was not going to plan. Plan? Who am I kidding?!
DeleteGreta action/scenario and although Red reacted well to the flanking Blue attack across the frd I reckon it was doomed when he lost his ocmmander- the end was well in sight.
ReplyDeleteA bit more luck with the dice may have saved Red and gained a well deserved draw at least.
I reckon this scenario would be well worth a second visit.
Thanks Joe - it is a great scenario and one that I hope to play again in the not too distant future
